1Password Introduces Location-Based Feature for Instant Access to Relevant Codes and Logins

1Password serves as a central repository for users’ most confidential information. It isn’t limited to merely storing passwords; it also holds secure notes, credit card details, codes, and much more. Thanks to a newly introduced feature, this information can now be accessed depending on your geographic location.

You can now assign locations to 1Password items for nearby access

Danny Grenzowski shares insights on the 1Password blog:

This new functionality allows you to associate specific locations with items stored within your vaults, making them visible in the 1Password mobile app when you are close to those physical sites.

Enabling this feature is straightforward; you only need to edit an item—new or existing—and select Add a location to assign a physical location. Once you are at that location, the relevant item will show up in the home tab of the 1Password mobile app. A map view is also included to simplify setting and viewing item locations.

A comprehensive support document is available that details how to set up locations for various items within your 1Password vaults.

Notably, this feature was developed with user privacy as a priority. The post states, “1Password checks for relevant items locally, ensuring your location coordinates remain on your device. Additionally, we have implemented extra protection specifically around the loading of map data for enhanced control.”

Insights from DMN

This appears to be an excellent new feature for occasions when you need to quickly access a specific code, login, or secure note repeatedly. It would be interesting to see a similar capability in Apple’s Passwords app.

While there might be concerns about privacy, it would be advantageous if 1Password could automatically display relevant logins based on my location, without requiring manual location assignments for items. For instance, if the app detects that I am at a Starbucks, it could automatically present my login details for that account. This could definitely be quite useful.
