Stimulus Checks

A petition for a monthly $2,000 stimulus check, initiated by a restaurant owner from Colorado, Stephanie Bonin has garnered more than 2 million signatures. Initially posted on the platform change.org in 2020, total signatures have crossed 2.25 million.

Bonin, in her petition, has written that she and millions of other Americans continue to be plagued by financial insecurity caused by the pandemic. Business and other establishments continue to remain closed throughout the country and millions of workers are jobless.

An Immediate And Regular $2,000 Stimulus Check

Many others are forced to remain at home to care for their families. The middle class and the poor are facing an unprecedented crisis.

She has called on Congress for an immediate $2,000 stimulus check for grownups and $1,000 for children that would continue till the crisis ended.

Workers laid-off, furloughed, and working reduced hours struggle to put the table and have to worry about losing their homes.

She said the situation was ‘catastrophic’ for working families. Monthly support can help many Americans back on their feet and save many families from financial ruin, she said.

Too Few And Far Between; Only Regular Payments Can Help

Many small businesses and the self-employed are without any means of income. A single stimulus check would not be a solution to the problems she has written.

Most Americans who got the $1,400 a couple of months back have already spent it on immediate needs. Though $800B in direct stimulus have gone out in the three rounds since last spring, they had barely made much effect.

Bonin’s petition has been recognized as among the 10 top petitions by the platform in 2020. It reveals the support for a fourth stimulus check.

But Republicans continue to stonewall any future stimulus checks. Even some Democrats have dithered in their support for further stimulus payments. They say that with the vaccination drive, and the opening up of the economy, the need for a fourth stimulus was receding gradually.
