Mark Gurman from Bloomberg reports that Apple is developing a new smart home doorbell to rival products from Ring. This device will feature “advanced facial recognition” and will seamlessly integrate with smart home locks.
While Apple currently sells a variety of third-party HomeKit locks, a doorbell equipped with facial recognition would mark a significant innovation. According to Gurman, the doorbell is intended to automatically unlock your home simply by recognizing your face:
The concept is that the doorbell could unlock the door for residents by scanning their face, much like how Face ID works on their iPhone.
This smart doorbell could potentially work with multiple third-party HomeKit locks, although details remain uncertain. Gurman mentions that Apple might collaborate with a specific lock manufacturer and provide a bundled package.
The smart home doorbell is still in the preliminary stages of development and will not be available until at least the end of next year, as per the report. This device will also utilize Apple’s new in-house networking chip.
Next year, Apple is anticipated to broaden its presence in the smart home market, launching a new control device that can be mounted on walls and might include a speaker base. Consider it a version akin to a Google Nest Hub. Additionally, we can expect updates to the Apple TV and HomePod mini as part of these initiatives.
