A strong game often revolves around a strong theme that ensures that players are engaged from the moment that they start playing. There are very few themes that come close to an Egyptian theme as it adds so much intrigue to players. No matter whether it is an Egyptian theme from early history or modern Egypt, it always engages with fans. These are some of the titles that have achieved more success than most with the theme.

Call of Duty is one of the most popular game franchises in the world, so it would come as no surprise that they adopted an Egyptian theme in Call of Duty: Black Ops III. The game saw the lead characters head to Egypt to find one of the characters in the game that has performed experiments on humans. The player also joins up with the Egyptian Army, and spends time exploring Cairo. The game was released in 2015, and was the final Call of Duty game to be released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The title was the highest selling in 2015, and grossed over 6.6 million sales in its first week. Furthermore, it was nominated for Best Shooter and Best Multiplayer at The Game Awards in the same year as its release.

The Sims is another one of the most popular gaming franchises in the world, and has also adopted an Egyptian theme to one of their titles. The Sims 3: World Adventures was the first expansion pack for the game, and allowed players to take their characters abroad to new places around the world. Among the places that players could visit was Egypt. Players would go to these new areas and try and earn points in order to level up their Sims and enable them to learn more skills. While in Egypt, players could take their Sims to see the Pyramids, and also teach their Sim how to charm snakes. Other countries that sums could visit were China and France. The title enjoyed excellent scores in the ratings, with GameRankings and Metacritic both giving it over 80% ratings. IGN also rated 8.3 oyt of ten, while GameZone rated it 8.7 out of ten.

You are literally building an Egyptian temple in this game – there’s not much more of a better way to implement this theme. This game makes its mark in the quality and unique nature of the components, with the obelisks, mosaics, and statues all adding to the flavor and theme. Cleopatra is a throwback to when Days of Wonder was the class of the gaming world with respect to the bits in the game. Thankfully, all the dazzle of the components helps distract from the fact that gameplay, while enjoyable for the family table, does not provide the deepest game experience. (Alex)
