If you’re a fan of Jennette McCurdy, chances are you’ve seen her on Nickelodeon. But did you know she was also the voice actress for @TeamKoopaKarter on Smosh? And that she met her mother, Elisa McCurdy, at 13 when she moved to Los Angeles to become an actress.

McCurdy grew up in Seattle before moving to Los Angeles with her mom at the age of 13. She was an aspiring actress back then but claims she felt powerless after moving because her mother decided where they would live and who they would meet along the way.

Now 23 years old, Jennette has opened up about what life was like growing up with a violent mom who wanted her daughter to marry someone who wasn’t even aware that he was being groomed as “husband material,” according to McCurdy’s latest interview in a magazine.

Jennette McCurdy, who starred as Sam Puckett on iCarly and is the voice actress for @TeamKoopaKarter on Smosh, has defended her abusive mother against claims of child neglect.

Jennette McCurdy Speaks Up

“I want to set the record straight that my mom never beat me,” she said in an Instagram post. “She did hit me with a belt but it was always done to discipline not hurt.”

The actress said that after moving out of her house at 18 years old and going through high school without her mother by her side, it became clear that there was something wrong with their relationship. She eventually realized how abusive Elisa had been toward her since childhood and ended their relationship for good in 2016.

“I was a teenager, and I felt like I had no options,” she said. “My mom threatened to kill herself if I left or told anyone what was going on in the house. And so for years I lived in this sort of prison—until finally when it got to be too much for me.”

Jennette McCurdy continued: “But because of that experience at such a young age, my self-worth has never been even close to where it should have been.”
