The IRS will send letters to millions of Americans who have yet to receive their promised stimulus payments, a top federal official said on Tuesday.
“Many taxpayers are unaware that they received an EIP and we want them to know about the money,” Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said during a press conference at the White House. “The IRS will be sending letters in coming days.”
The IRS must be able to trace the payment to the correct account and track where it was sent, as well as what account it went into.
Stimulus Check Coming With Other Perks
“It has to do with the IRS’s ability to trace where the payment was sent, what account it went into,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said at a White House press briefing. “That’s why they’re sending out these letters.”
The IRS website is currently down, and the agency has not said when it expects it to be back up. “We are working to restore the IRS website, which was impacted by cyberattack,” an IRS spokesperson said in a statement. “Taxpayers can continue to file their taxes as normal.”
