Stimulus Check

An additional round of stimulus checks is on its way to American households. The first round of payments was mailed out in March, with an average of $1,600 each. The second payment could be coming as soon as the end of November. Here’s what you need to know about how much money will arrive in your mailbox and when it might arrive there.

Eligibility is based on your income and the number of dependents you have.

  • Your income (modified gross income) must be equal to or less than $32,000 if you are single and file as head of household or qualifying widow(er) with a dependent child;
  • Your modified gross income must be equal to or less than $46,000 if you are married and filing jointly; You can’t claim both the Earned Income Tax Credit and Additional Child Tax Credit for the same qualifying child.  The amount you can get is based on your income and family size. If you are married, your spouse’s income is included, as are the incomes of any dependents.
  • If you have children who are younger than 19 years old, their income will be included in determining eligibility for the public charge test.

    If you’ve already received a first-round stimulus check tax refund, then you’ll also receive another one in 2020 – up to $1,600 per person (with a maximum total amount of $2,200). Most people who receive their first-round refund in December will also see their second round arrive around this time as well – though some people may receive it later than others due to logistical issues with getting everyone’s paperwork together by the deadline.
