Before getting sober in the latter half of 2020, John Mulaney thought that if he was balancing Adderall and Coke with Klonopin and Xanax, he would be absolutely fine.
The 40-year-old comedian later detailed the intervention that had preceded his stint in rehab during his appearance on This Past Weekend w/ Theo Von. He stated that he had walked into his home and his pockets were completely lined with drugs- and he found a group of people waiting for him. He went on to explain that he had just been to the apartment of his drug dealer, and he had finally got the right balance- one pocket filled with coke and Adderall, and another pocket which was filled with Xanax. He felt that he had finally reached equilibrium.
John Mulaney Talks About His History Of Substance Abuse
John Mulaney also admitted that he had been quite strung out at that time, but was also insisting that he hadn’t been using drugs over the last few days. He mentioned that he had constantly told all the people around him that he was absolutely sober, and had been so for quite some time. Nevertheless, he did acknowledge that his addiction had gone off the rails at that very point. He shared that there were times when he felt like he had done too much, and this was getting quite serious. He felt he should go down to the lobby and sit there- in case he needed to lie down and feel himself.
But since he was living near a health facility, John Mulaney wondered if he should ask the guardsman to call for a paramedic. The former writer of Saturday Night Live mentioned that he spent around five or six days in detox, during which he felt as if his skeleton wanted to rip out of his body. He was simply writhing in pain where he lay down.
