Russian Government Pressures Apple to Eliminate Additional Independent News Apps

Apple offers the App Store in nearly every region, ensuring users can access a vast array of software. However, part of this duty includes adhering to local regulations. This necessitates Apple to frequently make the tough decision to remove specific apps to prevent the risk of entirely shutting down the App Store in those areas.

The most recent instance occurred in Russia. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Apple swiftly withdrew from the market as a retailer and mobile payment provider. Nonetheless, the tussle over app listings persists. RadioFreeEurope Radio Liberty reports on their situation:

U.S. tech giant Apple has informed RFE/RL that it has taken down yet another app after receiving a request from Russia’s media authority, Roskomnadzor.

The app that was recently removed is for the Russian Service, which hosts the websites for its regional initiatives, Siberia.Realities and North.Realities.

Previously, Apple had removed apps for RFE/RL’s Kyrgyz Service and Current Time, a Russian-language digital and television network managed by RFE/RL.

Roskomnadzor has alerted Apple that the Russian Service app includes content from an organization marked as “undesirable” in Russia.

RFE/RL also mentioned that Apple has “removed or concealed several Russian-language podcasts created by independent journalists.” Similar to the App Store situation, the choice lies between complying with local government orders and eliminating the Podcasts catalog in that region.
