‘HomePad’ Could Render HomePod Obsolete, Yet It May Also Be Its Savior

Apple is gearing up to make a significant move in the smart home sector, with the upcoming ‘HomePad’ set to be the cornerstone of a comprehensive strategy. But what implications does this new gadget have for the future of the HomePod? Could it signal the end of the HomePod’s relevance? Perhaps, but it might also be the lifeline it needs.

The HomePod and Its Apple Intelligence Challenge

The HomePod and HomePod mini have been built around two primary functionalities:

  1. Music playback
  2. Interactions with Siri

Apple has always placed a strong emphasis on the first aspect, perhaps more so than anticipated prior to the launch of the smart speaker. The original HomePod provided an impressive music listening experience, yet, as numerous reviews highlighted, Siri’s performance couldn’t quite compete with rivals like Alexa.

Throughout the years, Apple has gradually enhanced Siri’s features on the HomePod, but it now faces a recurring challenge. Current hardware seems unable to take advantage of Apple Intelligence and its enhanced Siri capabilities.

The new Siri is just beginning to roll out, and it’s expected to incorporate ChatGPT next month alongside significant new features in the spring.

As these enhancements arrive, if the HomePod is unable to support them, it may find itself in its original predicament: excellent for music, yet lacking in the Siri department.

This is where the new HomePad steps in.

The Adaptability of the New ‘HomePad’

The soon-to-be-announced HomePad, as reported by Mark Gurman, appears to possess all the capabilities of the HomePod and much more, including support for the advanced Siri from Apple Intelligence.

This device will function as a smart display with integrated speakers. While those speakers may not match the audio quality of the HomePod, a central feature of the HomePad will be its adaptability through various attachments.

According to Gurman:

Apple has created different attachments for this device, including options for mounting screens on walls like traditional home-security panels. There will also be stands with additional speakers that can be set up in a kitchen, on a bedside table, or at a desk. Apple envisions using the FaceTime feature for cooking, or during videoconferences for work meetings.

A critical aspect to note is the ‘stands with additional speakers.’

If these standalone speaker bases are mainly aimed at enhancing FaceTime functionality, possibly with extra microphones, they may not fully replace HomePods. Instead, I envision a setup akin to conference call equipment.

However, it is also likely that these speaker attachments could deliver at least comparable audio quality to the HomePod mini, and might even approach the larger HomePod’s performance.

HomePad’s Future: Coexistence or Replacement?

As I ponder the new HomePad’s potential interactions with the HomePod, two possible outcomes emerge.

  1. Coexisting: Apple may allow the HomePods to maintain their focus on audio performance while the HomePad addresses additional functionalities. Ideally, the two devices could collaborate such that Siri commands directed at a HomePod are processed by a nearby HomePad, with the responses relayed back to the HomePod. This scenario would mean the HomePad enhances the HomePod’s capabilities rather than replace it.
  2. Replacing: On the other hand, the HomePad could render the HomePod obsolete, leading to its eventual discontinuation. This will largely depend on the audio quality and design of the HomePad’s speaker attachments. If they manage to rival the audio performance of the HomePod, the original smart speaker might find itself relegated to a niche market with a grim outlook.

We hope to receive more insights into Apple’s strategy for the HomePad in the coming months.

Regardless, spring is on the horizon, bringing with it the kickoff of Apple’s renewed efforts in the smart home arena.
