The Touch Bar was a divisive innovation from Apple. However, the recently phased-out MacBook Pro feature finds new life through a Kickstarter initiative aimed at creating a more adaptable standalone device: the Flexbar.
Flexbar: A More Versatile Spiritual Successor to the Touch Bar
The Flexbar draws inspiration from Apple’s Touch Bar, as highlighted by its creators:
The end of the original Touch Bar doesn’t imply the concept was flawed—it merely wasn’t fully explored…the possibilities for a customizable, adaptive interface to enhance workflows were substantial.
Many users associate the Touch Bar with the issues surrounding Apple’s butterfly keyboard, which is a distinctly separate concern.
Nevertheless, the Flexbar encapsulates the essence of the original concept, presenting it as a standalone device compatible with various electronics—without the need to give up a physical function key row.
Key features of the Flexbar include:
- Compatibility with Mac, Windows, and mobile devices
- 2K AMOLED display
- USB-C connectivity
- Non-slip silicone pads
- Durable aluminum construction with an aluminum magnetic stand
- Customizable tools tailored to your needs
Backing the project costs between $119 and $149 depending on the timing, with an anticipated retail price of $179 at launch.
As always with Kickstarter projects, exercise caution before backing. Hardware products, especially those integrating software aspects like the Flexbar, have a varied track record in terms of successes and failures on the platform.
DMN’s Perspective
While I’ve never owned a MacBook with the Touch Bar, I found it to be an intriguing concept that faced challenges with execution. Theoretically, the Flexbar could serve as a wonderful successor, but there is a significant caveat: this is a Kickstarter project, and we must wait for user feedback to truly gauge its performance.
