15 Apple Products Discontinued This Fall

This fall has been quite eventful for Apple, featuring a packed September event, the mid-October launch of the iPad mini 7, and a thrilling series of announcements at the month’s end.

Amid these product launches, several older models have been phased out and are no longer for sale at the Apple Store. Nonetheless, shoppers can still find excellent deals on the previous generation products from various third-party sellers.

#1 – iPad mini 6

In October, Apple released a new iPad mini featuring support for Apple Intelligence and compatibility with the Apple Pencil Pro, addressing the jelly scrolling issue that affected the iPad mini 6. While the update is minor, it was certainly necessary after a three-year wait.

For those who don’t need Apple Intelligence, last generation iPad mini is available for $349 with 64GB of storage.

#2 – FineWoven iPhone cases

Apple introduced its controversial FineWoven cases alongside the iPhone 15 last year as an environmentally friendly alternative to leather. Marketed as a premium fabric material, they unfortunately didn’t meet expectations, scratching too easily and lacking the desired premium feel.

Acknowledging this, Apple has discontinued FineWoven iPhone cases for the iPhone 16 series but still offers FineWoven MagSafe wallets and Apple Watch bands. Various deals for FineWoven cases for the iPhone 15 can be found on Amazon, including one for the iPhone 15 Pro priced at just $21.

#3 – M3 MacBook Pro

Last month, Apple launched the new MacBook Pro with M4 chipsets – M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max, along with upgraded Thunderbolt 5 capabilities on higher models, necessary RAM enhancements, Center Stage support, and an option for a nano-texture display.

Several enticing deals are available for the M3 MacBook Pros, including a base model at Best Buy for $1199—a remarkable price for a 14-inch MacBook Pro given its display quality.

#4 – M2 Mac mini

Earlier this month, Apple unveiled the most substantial redesign of the Mac mini yet, making it significantly smaller than its predecessor, with front I/O options and M4/M4 Pro chipsets. This redesign also included an upgrade in RAM, with M4 models starting at 16GB and M4 Pro models starting at 24GB. It’s now Apple’s most potent desktop option.

No compelling deals are available for the prior Mac mini model, and purchasing it may not be wise considering the extensive redesign. You can buy the M4 Mac mini on Amazon for $499 after applying an on-page coupon; the outgoing model is currently priced at $469, but it offers only half the RAM.

#5 – M3 iMac

The iMac received a refresh last month, moving from M3 to M4, adding support for more Thunderbolt ports, and incorporating Center Stage capabilities similar to the MacBook Pro. It now includes 16GB of RAM by default, all at the same starting price of $1299, and is available in new colors.

While there are no significant deals on the older M3 iMac, a $150 discount can be applied to the current model after clipping the on-page coupon, making it $1149 on Amazon.

#6 and 7 – iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max

Continuing a trend since the 2018 iPhone XS launch, Apple discontinued the previous generation of flagship iPhones, meaning the iPhone 15 Pro models are no longer available now that the iPhone 16 Pro models have been released. However, there’s a compelling reason to consider purchasing a refurbished iPhone 15 Pro, as it’s one of the few iPhones that offers support for Apple Intelligence.

You can currently find a renewed premium 128GB iPhone 15 Pro for $719 or a renewed premium 256GB iPhone 15 Pro Max for $894. Amazon Renewed Premium devices come with a one-year return policy, ensuring you’re covered in case of issues.

#8 – iPhone 13

Launched in 2021, the iPhone 13 brought numerous enhancements, such as improved battery life, a new camera system, and a smaller notch. Originally starting at $799, it has experienced a series of price drops, hitting a low of $599 before being discontinued.

While Amazon may not offer new iPhones in the US, you can find refurbished units for as little as $370 for an unlocked iPhone 13 in excellent condition.

#9, 10, and 11 – Lightning Magic Accessories

In conjunction with the latest Mac refresh, Apple transitioned the Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, and Magic Keyboard to USB-C, discontinuing the older Lightning versions.

While there are some deals on Lightning versions of these accessories, I would advise against purchasing them given their potential longevity. Nevertheless, the Lightning Magic Mouse is currently $12 off, and the Lightning Magic Trackpad is around $20 off.

#12 – Apple Watch Series 9

Following the introduction of the slimmer Apple Watch Series 10, Apple phased out the Apple Watch Series 9, likely due to a lack of price differentiation between the Series 10 and Series SE.

Some deals can be found for the Series 9, such as one priced at $299; however, I’d recommend avoiding it since the Series 10 is available starting at $329.

#13, 14, and 15 – Remaining Lightning AirPods

With the recent launch of AirPods 4 and USB-C AirPods Max models, Apple has retired all Lightning port variants, including AirPods 2, 3, and Max. The AirPods 4 now come in two versions at varying prices, one featuring noise cancellation and another without.

I would personally steer clear of the AirPods 2 or 3 since the AirPods 4 present a much better value. The basic model is available for $119, and the noise-canceling version for $168. Additionally, consider the USB-C AirPods Pro 2 priced at $169 if you’re after noise cancellation options.

There are also clearance deals on AirPods Max (Lightning), with prices dropping to as low as $399.

While the latest technology always appears attractive and state-of-the-art, I believe it’s wise to consider deals on previously discontinued items.
