Today, OpenAI unveiled another significant product in its series of announcements: Sora, its video generation model, is now accessible to everyone. Here’s an overview of what it offers.
Sora offers much more than just creating original videos on demand
Initially revealed in February, Sora was only available to a limited number of researchers. However, it has now been made publicly accessible.
So, what exactly is Sora? It’s a model designed for generating videos based on text input.
While this description sets a basic understanding, there are several qualifiers and limitations in this initial version.
This functionality allows you to generate completely original videos simply by inputting a command, but there are even more practical applications to consider.
According to OpenAI’s website, here’s what Sora can accomplish:
- Remix: Alter, remove, or re-envision components in your video using the Remix feature (e.g., Remove the spaceship, add a jungle)
- Re-cut: Identify and segment the best frames, extending them as needed to finalize a scene
- Storyboard: Arrange and edit a unique sequence of your videos on a customized timeline
- Loop: Cut and create continuous, seamless videos with the loop feature
- Blend: Merge two videos into one cohesive clip
- Style Presets: Craft and share styles that inspire you using the Presets option
The capabilities listed indicate that Sora could be an enjoyable tool for beginners looking to craft original videos.
However, its primary advantage, at least for now, may lie in its potential to assist YouTubers and filmmakers during the video editing process.
Who can access Sora, and its current restrictions
Unlike ChatGPT, Sora is not available to free users. Access requires a subscription.
You can utilize Sora with a $20/month ChatGPT Plus subscription, or through the newly introduced $200/month ChatGPT Pro option.
Here are the limitations associated with each plan:
ChatGPT Plus
- Up to 50 priority video creations (1,000 credits)
- Resolution up to 720p and a duration limit of 5 seconds
ChatGPT Pro
- Up to 500 priority video creations (10,000 credits)
- Unlimited relaxed video options
- Resolution up to 1080p, 20 seconds duration, and 5 concurrent generations
- Download capability without watermark
The final point is particularly significant, as ChatGPT Plus users will have a watermark on all Sora-generated content—regardless of their preference.
Despite these limitations, Sora represents a compelling addition to the ChatGPT Plus subscription, which could entice users to subscribe—especially with the new ChatGPT integration in iOS 18.2 on the horizon.
