Apple Watch Set to Transition from LTE to 5G with Expected Modem Upgrade

Since its introduction with the Apple Watch Series 3 in 2017, optional cellular connectivity has been available. However, while smartphones transitioned to 5G technology, the Apple Watch has continued to utilize 4G LTE. This situation may soon change with the latest upcoming models.

According to trusted source Mark Gurman, Apple is planning to change modem suppliers, marking the Apple Watch’s transition to 5G for the first time. This information is part of an exclusive Bloomberg report discussing a new satellite feature that could be designed for the Apple Watch Ultra 3.

“Switching to MediaTek will also introduce support for 5G Redcap, a more affordable tier of 5G designed for internet-connected devices and wearables that generally do not need high-speed data connections,” Gurman states. “Current Apple Watches remain on 4G LTE and have not transitioned to the 5G standard, despite Apple’s shift in 2020 with the iPhone.”

As highlighted in Gurman’s statement, he is the first to reveal Apple’s intention to replace Intel modems in its cellular Apple Watch models with new 5G modems from MediaTek. This serves as a reminder that some Apple Watch models still utilize Intel Inside, even as Apple has moved away entirely from the chipmaker for its Mac computers.
