Occasionally, a developer releases an application that allows users to convert their iPhone screen into a retro iPod. These apps typically don’t last long before being removed from the App Store by Apple, but there’s now a new one available that you might want to check out before it’s too late.
To navigate around Apple’s restrictions, developers often use various tactics to mask the app’s features, and this new entry is no different …
The App Store review policies restrict most representations of Apple products or user interfaces, and such applications may also infringe upon the prohibition against “copycat” applications. This necessitates some ingenuity to pass the app review process.
For instance, Rewound required you to install a theme post-download to function.
The app features standard control buttons by default. The hidden trick lies in a feature that allows users to upload any image as the player skin. By applying the iPod Classic theme, which is not provided within the app, the buttons become concealed and are then operable via a virtual Click Wheel.
In the case of My Classic-Retro Console (discovered by Macworld), the primary feature highlighted is replicating the GameBoy. The iPod emulator is neither mentioned in the app description nor depicted in the App Store screenshots.
The app is priced at $2.99, with an option to give a tip from within the app.
DMN’s Perspective
While Apple’s policies are generally reasonable, it feels unfortunate to prohibit these lighthearted nostalgic experiences. Nonetheless, the app is likely to be removed swiftly, so make sure to download it while you still can.
