Mark Gurman has been hinting for several months about the anticipated M4 MacBook Air set to launch in 2025, but you don’t need to hold off for an updated version. Recent enhancements to the current MacBook lineup are arguably more impactful than merely switching to a new chip generation.
The details surrounding the M4 MacBook Air expected in 2025 aren’t particularly elusive. The M4 chip has already been featured in devices like the latest iPad Pro, and it’s the same processor found in new iMacs and certain Mac mini configurations. Stronger variations of the M4 are also utilized in MacBook Pro and some Mac mini models, meaning the M4 in the upcoming MacBook Air likely won’t surprise us.
As for design changes, we don’t anticipate a drastic overhaul with the 2025 MacBook Air. It’s expected to closely resemble the M2 and M3 versions. While we hope for a palette influenced by the iMac colors, it seems likely that we will see familiar options like midnight, starlight, silver, and space gray. However, Apple might decide to replace space gray with space black, similar to the standard M4 MacBook Pro. Time will tell!
That said, the M4 MacBook Air is still expected to be the best consumer laptop yet. Apple might even introduce a nanotexture display option similar to those found in the M4 iMac and MacBook Pro. However, the current M2 and M3 MacBook Air models have recently received a notable specification upgrade, making them a strong choice for consumers.
This enhancement is largely due to Apple’s decision to increase the base RAM from 8GB to 16GB for both current and previous generation MacBook Air models without raising prices! This shift is likely a result of Apple Intelligence. Even those who frequently juggle many Safari tabs will notice the benefits of such a RAM upgrade compared to a standard annual chip enhancement.
Apple has taken steps to maintain excitement around the MacBook Air lineup between chip releases. Notably, when the M2 chip was still current, Apple introduced an all-new 15-inch MacBook Air.
If you’re considering purchasing a new MacBook Air or gifting one during the holiday season, know this: A) You’re a thoughtful gift-giver, and B) neither you nor the recipient will be disappointed, even with the looming release of a new M4 MacBook Air in a trendy shade of gray next year.
