Welcome to Rumor Replay, a weekly feature on DMN where we highlight the latest Apple product rumors, backed by my insights and thoughts. Today, we’ll discuss new home devices, cellular Macs, gaming controllers for Vision Pro, and more. Here is this week’s roundup of Apple rumors.
Updates to Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini Expected in 2025
According to Mark Gurman, Apple plans to release updated versions of the Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini in 2025.
No further specifics were mentioned apart from the anticipated launch timeframe, but it’s refreshing to know that new iterations of Apple’s home devices—known for their infrequent updates—are on the horizon.
I’m particularly keen to see how these products integrate with the forthcoming ‘HomePad’ to enhance Apple’s home ecosystem. I had been concerned that the HomePod might eventually be discontinued, but it appears Apple has further ambitions for it.
Cellular Macs and Vision Pro Are Taking Shape
Reports suggest that Apple is ‘exploring’ the integration of its new in-house 5G chip into future Macs and the Vision Pro headset.
I have always hoped that the development of Apple’s proprietary 5G modem would synchronize with the arrival of cellular capabilities in the Mac lineup, and it appears that this might indeed be the case.
Cellular connectivity is a vital feature for me on the iPad Pro, and I feel it’s about time the Mac also received this update. Although nothing is confirmed yet, I sense the timing is right.
If cellular Macs do eventually launch, I will need to reconsider whether the Mac could serve as a more suitable primary computing option for my needs.
Genuine VR Game Controllers for Vision Pro
Apple has largely sidelined gaming on the Vision Pro, but recent buzz suggests that compatibility with PlayStation VR2’s hand controllers could be on the way for visionOS.
I’m pleased to see that Apple recognizes the need to bolster its gaming offerings for the Vision Pro. However, I’m slightly concerned that the company believes that collaborating with Sony will sufficiently satisfy gamers. It simply won’t.
Apple needs a stronger gaming narrative for Vision Pro, and while the PlayStation VR2 controllers can certainly play a part, I hope there are additional developments in the works.
Eliminating the MacBook Notch
As per an Omdia study, the upcoming MacBook Pro set for 2026 is anticipated to feature an OLED display without a notch.
The notch has never been the most aesthetically pleasing feature, so I welcome Apple’s move to do away with it on the Mac. Expect a similar transition for the MacBook Air, though likely in a year or two, as Apple doesn’t plan to introduce OLED displays for the Air in the near future.
Focusing on New Chips
This week’s Apple chatter has revolved around the exciting new chips the company is reportedly developing:
These updates are intriguing not solely for the chips but for the enhancements they may yield for various products.
I am particularly interested in how Apple’s Wi-Fi chip could pave the way for a new Wi-Fi router in the future.
