Reporters Without Borders (RSF) expresses deep concern regarding the threats posed to media organizations by emerging artificial intelligence (AI) tools, particularly after a new Apple product inadvertently generated a misleading news alert attributed to the BBC. This incident demonstrates that generative AI services are not yet sufficiently refined to provide the public with reliable information and should not be available on the market for such purposes.
Vincent Berthier, RSF’s technology lead, provided a more specific appeal for Apple to take action.
AIs function as probability engines, and facts should not be determined by chance. RSF urges Apple to take responsible action by eliminating this feature. The automatic generation of false information linked to a media outlet undermines the outlet’s credibility and threatens the public’s right to dependable information regarding current events.
The BBC has reported that Apple has yet to respond to its complaint.
