Satellite Messaging without iPhone
The Apple Watch Ultra has been tailored for adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts, and next year, Apple will introduce a new feature specifically for those who venture off the beaten path.
Satellite messaging will be available on the Apple Watch Ultra 3.
According to Gurman:
This technology will enable smartwatch users to send text messages via Globalstar Inc.’s satellite network even when they lack cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity.
While iPhone users have enjoyed this feature for some time, enhanced with a significant iOS 18 update, the Apple Watch has not had this satellite connectivity until now. With the Ultra 3, users will find it easier than ever to leave their iPhone behind and truly connect with nature.
5G Cellular for the First Time
This third enhancement also revolves around connectivity. While previous Apple Watch Ultra models have been restricted to 4G LTE, plans are in place to introduce 5G to the Ultra 3 in 2025.
This new connectivity will reportedly utilize 5G Redcap, a more efficient version of 5G which consumes less power. Although Redcap may not achieve the same maximum speeds as the 5G available on iPhones, it will help preserve battery life on the Watch.
