Just earlier this week, T-Mobile revealed that registration for beta testing Starlink connectivity on mobile devices is now open, with actual testing slated to commence early next year – approximately two years after the original announcement.
In 2022, T-Mobile collaborated with SpaceX to enable T-Mobile users to take advantage of Starlink satellites, aiming to eliminate coverage gaps for customers. This initiative required SpaceX to develop new direct-to-cell satellites, and according to T-Mobile, there are currently over 300 of these satellites in orbit.
In their press statement, T-Mobile disclosed that these innovative Starlink satellites will span over 500,000 square miles of territory that presently lacks cell tower service. SpaceX is also set to continue launching additional direct-to-cell satellites in the future, although no timeline for a full rollout has been indicated.
During the beta phase, users will be able to send text messages, with voice and data functionalities coming at a later date.
All postpaid T-Mobile customers, including businesses and first responders, are eligible to enroll, and it’s worth noting that no higher-tier plan is necessary for participation in the beta test.
If you’re on a consumer plan, you can sign up for the beta here, and businesses/first responders can register at this link.
