This week, Bluesky introduced a significant new feature for its users: Trending Topics. With this update, individuals can discover the conversations that are currently popular on the platform. However, the functionality has several limitations to note.
Bluesky Unveils Trending Topics
According to a post from Bluesky’s official account, the Trending Topics feature is now live on both the app and website. Users can explore a list of the most actively discussed subjects on Bluesky right now. By clicking on a topic, they can view the top posts and recent discussions related to that topic.
Currently, Bluesky’s Trending Topics are global, meaning they do not vary by region. Bluesky has indicated that this feature is still in beta, and there are important details for users to keep in mind. For example, the trending topics are available only to users engaging with Bluesky in English, though additional languages are expected to be added in the future.
Users have the option to disable the Trending Topics feature by clicking the “X” button or by changing settings in the app. Additionally, muted words will not appear in the Trending Topics. With this enhancement, Bluesky once again competes directly with Threads, which continues to restrict its Trending Topics feature to users based in the U.S. and Japan.
Bluesky has experienced rapid growth recently, accumulating 10 million users within a month, resulting in a total of over 25 million users, as reported by a site that utilizes Bluesky’s API for statistics. This swift rise is prompting Meta to expedite the rollout of new features for Threads.
The rivalry between Bluesky and Threads has intensified as an increasing number of users search for alternatives to X (formerly known as Twitter).
You can download the Bluesky app for free from the App Store, compatible with iPhones running iOS 15.1 or later. Ensure that you have the latest version of the app to access all new features.
