Schlage Sense Pro Launched with Matter Through Thread and Ultra Wideband Support

At CES 2025 in Las Vegas today, Schlage introduced its latest innovation, the Schlage Sense Pro Smart Deadbolt, which is the company’s inaugural smart lock enabled with Ultra Wideband technology, featuring support for Matter-over-Thread.

Schlage has been a leader in the world of smart locks for connected homes. In March 2022, it became the first brand to roll out an NFC-assisted smart lock enabling Apple Home Keys, known as the Schlage Encode Plus. Now, let’s explore the features and functionalities of the forthcoming Schlage Sense Pro Smart Deadbolt.

The Schlage Sense Pro will come equipped with Matter-over-Thread support, allowing for hands-free unlocking. Thread is a low-bandwidth, low-latency, and power-efficient communication protocol designed for IoT devices. Compared to Wi-Fi, it enhances battery longevity in connected gadgets and reduces the delay between command issuance.

Another benefit of using Thread is the elimination of the need for a dedicated hub for each device or brand. A thread-enabled border router is all that’s necessary, and the good news is that you may already own one. The HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini, and the 3rd-generation Apple TV 4K with Ethernet are equipped with Thread radios and can function as border routers. Additionally, there are several non-Apple Thread border routers available.

With Matter support via Thread, the Schlage Sense Pro is set to be a highly adaptable smart lock. It can be managed effortlessly through multiple platforms such as Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, and Google. Furthermore, it exploits the efficiency, bandwidth, and latency benefits of Thread.

However, the Sense Pro aims to deliver even more. Schlage’s top-tier lock incorporates the latest version of its Converge technology, which provides Ultra Wideband support between the lock and the authorized device paired to it.

This Ultra Wideband technology adeptly measures speed, trajectory, and motion, allowing the lock to accurately gauge the user’s location and intent to enter. Essentially, it will unlock the door precisely as the user approaches. The Sense Pro boasts several convenient functionalities, including hands-free unlocking, keypad access code entry, and tap-to-unlock via NFC, among others.

The Schlage Sense Pro, much like its predecessor, the Encode Plus (review), is set to become an exciting feature in connected homes. What are your thoughts on this device? Schlage has stated that we can expect its new flagship smart lock to be available later this year. We will be sure to share further information, including an in-depth review and hands-on experience once it launches!
