Apple’s 2025 Chinese New Year Shot on iPhone Film Released Online

Apple has a tradition of celebrating the Chinese New Year with a specially commissioned Shot on iPhone film, and an unofficial version of this year’s video has surfaced ahead of the anticipated official release later today. The lunar new year starts on January 29.

The short musical film, titled I Want to Listen to You, is directed by Michael Gracey, known for his work on the Hollywood musical The Greatest Showman.

Since 2018, Apple has utilized this occasion to usher in the lunar year, while also highlighting the cinematic capabilities of the latest iPhone. What seems to be a low-resolution bootleg of this year’s video has been posted on Bilibili.

Passionate Geekz shares insights on the film’s storyline.

In contrast to the traditional familial and cultural themes of past years, Want to Listen to Songs with You transports viewers back to the 1990s. The main character, Xiaowei, faces the familiar question during a New Year’s Eve family dinner:

“When are you going to find a girlfriend? Grandma is waiting for a grandson.”
“It’s not that simple. You’re all viewing this from your own perspective.”
“Back in the day, your dad used a cassette tape to pursue your mom.”

Likely due to his association with cassette tapes, Xiaowei, after dinner, retreats to his room and discovers old tapes on his shelf. Among them, he finds a tape labeled “Little Rose for Me,” which transports him back to 1994.
