If you possess an iPhone 14 or newer, you can send text messages via satellite in areas lacking cellular coverage. This is especially useful during emergencies, such as the wildfires in Los Angeles, which have damaged or destroyed cell towers.
T-Mobile and Starlink have joined forces to extend this same functionality to users with smartphones that do not have this feature…
Launched in 2022, Apple’s Emergency SOS via Satellite service allows iPhone 14 users to reach emergency services in regions without cellular reception. With the release of iOS 18, this service now enables users of compatible iPhones to send texts to friends and family as well.
This capability hinges on a satellite radio chip that is only included in the iPhone 14 and subsequent models, making it unavailable to older iPhone owners.
In light of the severe wildfires impacting the Los Angeles region, T-Mobile and Starlink have collaborated to provide these features to any smartphone connected to the T-Mobile network. SpaceX made this announcement on X today.
For residents in the Los Angeles area, the @Starlink team and @TMobile have activated basic texting (SMS) using our Direct to Cell satellites. You can now send texts to loved ones, contact 911, and get emergency alerts.
The wildfires in LA have claimed at least 10 lives and destroyed over 1,000 structures, with five active fires exacerbated by high winds.
Apple CEO Tim Cook expressed his heartbreak over the wildfires and announced that the company will contribute to relief efforts. Additionally, Apple Card users in affected regions are allowed to defer repayments without interest or penalties.
There was also confusion caused by an erroneous evacuation alert sent to all iPhone users in Los Angeles instead of just those located in Calabasas and Agoura Hills.
