Apple Watch SE Expected to Debut with Fresh Design Later This Year; Additional Health Features in Development

Mark Gurman from Bloomberg reports that a new Apple Watch SE is set to debut later this year, alongside updates for the Apple Watch Series 11 and Ultra 3. Current rumors suggest it could be an exciting year for the Apple Watch lineup.

Upcoming Apple Watch SE

Details regarding the new Apple Watch SE are scarce, but Gurman notes it will feature a ‘fresh design’.

Originally launched in 2020, the Apple Watch SE borrowed its design from the 2018 Apple Watch Series 4. It’s possible the new version will align more closely with the 2021 Apple Watch Series 7, or it may present an entirely new aesthetic.

Previously, Gurman hinted at a possibility of a plastic casing for the new Apple Watch SE, which might be what he’s referencing. If you are thinking about purchasing an Apple Watch SE, it could be worth waiting for this upcoming model, expected to launch this year. If a plastic version does arrive, it may come in various vibrant colors as well.

Apple Watch Series 11 and Ultra 3

The premium Apple Watch variants are likely to maintain their existing design, according to Gurman, who suggests they will ‘likely remain mostly unchanged.’ However, there are still anticipated upgrades.

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is expected to include features such as satellite connectivity and 5G RedCap, which will significantly enhance users’ connectivity options. Additionally, high blood pressure detection is likely to feature in both the Apple Watch Series 11 and Apple Watch Ultra 3 this year. While the blood pressure readings won’t provide specific values, they will alert users to potential health concerns:

The blood-pressure feature…is designed to function similarly to Apple’s sleep apnea detection. It won’t provide precise readings—like systolic or diastolic levels—but it will notify users if they might be experiencing hypertension.

The introduction of blood pressure monitoring was initially slated for the Apple Watch Series 10 but was postponed due to the watch’s new, slimmer design. However, it seems Apple is prepared to introduce this feature in the coming year.

Gurman also mentioned that Apple is developing a new AI coaching service and a revamped health app, but the timeline for their release remains uncertain. These enhancements may coincide with the debut of AirPods equipped with heart rate monitoring capabilities.

Conclusion

If these predictions materialize, it appears Apple is set to refresh its entire line of Apple Watch models simultaneously—something not accomplished since 2022 when the Apple Watch SE 2, Apple Watch Series 8, and the original Apple Watch Ultra were unveiled.

While 2024 had expectations for the Apple Watch Ultra 3, the company instead released a new black titanium version of the Apple Watch Ultra 2, with the new Apple Watch SE still forthcoming. Nevertheless, it is hoped that 2025 will bring the anticipated updates.
