New legislation that took effect in Illinois as of January 1 allows the Secretary of State’s office to issue digital ID cards and driver’s licenses for the very first time. As part of this initiative, the state is working with Apple to integrate IDs into Apple Wallet.
In a press release issued today, Illinois Secretary Alexi Giannoulias affirmed that the state will support IDs in Apple Wallet by year’s end.
“We’re thrilled to have initiated our collaboration with Apple—a company that shares our dedication to data security—to provide IDs in Apple Wallet that will enhance convenience and privacy for residents of Illinois. This represents the first step in a comprehensive strategy to develop a cutting-edge mobile driver’s license and state ID program, utilizing top-tier technology for our community.”
Once the program debuts, Illinois residents can add their IDs to Apple Wallet on their iPhones. These digital IDs will be accepted at “select businesses and venues” and can also be utilized at certain TSA checkpoints.
Residents can visit the Illinois Secretary of State’s website for additional information and to sign up for notifications as the rollout of digital IDs progresses over the year.

Currently, digital IDs in Apple Wallet can be found in the following locations:
- Arizona
- California
- Georgia
- Hawaii
- Iowa
- Maryland
- New Mexico
- Ohio
- Puerto Rico
Besides Illinois, these states have also pledged to support IDs in Apple Wallet; however, they have not provided specific timelines.
- Connecticut
- Montana
- Kentucky
- West Virginia
- North Carolina
- Mississippi
- Oklahoma
- Utah
