If Ray-Ban Meta glasses aren’t quite what you prefer, there’s news of Oakley planning to release a new pair of smart glasses later this year. These glasses are expected to offer functionality similar to Meta’s current AI glasses but with a distinct design.
The upcoming Oakley model is said to be based on the Sphaera design, which targets cyclists and athletes more broadly …
Meta’s initial smart glasses are modeled after the Ray-Ban Wayfarer, with additional models like Skyler and Headliner also available.
Some of our team at DMN tested them and were pleased to find that they closely resemble the non-smart variants in both look and feel. They provided a convenient way to capture POV images and quick videos, along with access to AI functionalities.
Oakley Smart Glasses
The Oakley smart glasses are anticipated to function similarly to the Ray-Bans but in different styles. Since both Ray-Ban and Oakley fall under the Luxottica umbrella, we can expect seamless collaboration on this front. This also hints at potential future Meta releases from other brands owned by the optical powerhouse.
Bloomberg reports.
Meta is expanding its smart glasses technology to additional fashion lines under partner Luxottica Group SA. This includes a new variant called “Supernova 2,” which is derived from Oakley’s Sphaera glasses with a camera positioned centrally in the frame, specifically for athletes.
The existing model incorporates a camera, microphones, and speakers. All information, including messages and AI replies, is conveyed through voice without an accompanying display—a feature that will also apply to the Oakley version.
A report last month indicated that Meta is also developing a more advanced version featuring a display.
Meta intends to introduce displays to its Ray-Ban smart glasses as early as next year, as the US technology giant accelerates its efforts to create lightweight headsets capable of replacing smartphones as consumers’ primary computing devices […]
The updated Ray-Bans could launch as soon as the latter half of 2025, according to sources, with the small display likely showing notifications or interactions from Meta’s virtual assistant.
The FT report did not specify pricing, though Bloomberg suggests they may retail for around $1,000.
The most significant enhancement this year will be a new premium variant, closer in design to current Ray-Ban offerings. Code-named “Hypernova,” this model will feature a display situated on the lower right lens, projecting information into the user’s line of sight […]
This device is anticipated to be more expensive, with some project team members estimating the Hypernova glasses to cost around $1,000, compared to the starting price of $299 for the existing Meta Ray-Bans.
