Hidden iPadOS Features You Need to Start Utilizing

If you’ve kept up with my content over the years, you may have noticed that my iPad Pro serves as my primary computer. Although I own a Mac Mini, my focus when it comes to productivity always leans toward my iPad (in fact, I’m writing this on my iPad right now). There’s something about the stunning hardware paired with the streamlined nature of the software that makes using the iPad truly enjoyable. The recent launch of iPadOS 18 brought a myriad of new features that reinforced my enthusiasm for this device. While we are all aware of the major features, I’d like to highlight some lesser-known enhancements that are equally impressive. Let’s dive into it!

Don’t forget to check out my video below where I explore the features I’ll mention here, plus much more.

1. Built-in Unit Converter

With the introduction of iPadOS 18, Apple has finally added a dedicated calculator app to the iPad. One of the standout features includes new Math Notes capabilities. Additionally, the calculator now comes with a built-in converter that allows you to convert various measurements. Whether you need to convert centimeters to feet, Pascals to Bar, or US dollars to Rupees, it’s all possible offline. This means you can access this functionality even without a data connection, which I find incredibly useful.

2. Sharing Wi-Fi via QR Code

You’re likely familiar with those incredible moments within the Apple Ecosystem when everything seamlessly connects. For instance, you can unlock your Mac using your Apple Watch or quickly copy and paste between devices. One particularly great feature allows you to share your Wi-Fi password with guests who have an iOS device; they simply tap your Wi-Fi network to gain access. However, what do you do when your visitor has an Android phone? Do they have to type your complex password manually? Thankfully, the answer is no!

The new Passwords app now lets you share your Wi-Fi by generating a QR code! Here’s how:

  1. Open the Passwords app
  2. Choose ‘Wi-Fi’
  3. Select your home network
  4. Tap ‘Show QR Code’
  5. Have your guest scan the code
  6. And just like that, they’re connected!

3. Formatting Drives on iPadOS

This next feature was a game changer for me. The Files app’s previous inability to format drives or SD cards often held it back. While other file systems have had this capability for a long time, it’s now available on the iPad through the Files app. Here’s how easy it is:

  1. Connect your SSD to the iPad
  2. Long press the drive in the Files app
  3. Select ‘Erase’ (don’t worry, it won’t just erase)
  4. A menu will appear
  5. Choose your desired format
  6. Hit “Erase”
  7. Voila! The drive is formatted and ready to use!

4. Home Screen Redesign

The home screen also underwent a significant redesign, allowing for greater customization of app sizes, colors, and tints. One exciting new feature is the ability to switch from an app icon to a widget without needing to enter customization mode. Simply long-press any app, and if it has a widget, you can instantly transform it into a widget right there.

5. Hide Distracting Items

This feature is one you might not realize how valuable it is until you find a use for it. Safari has introduced a feature that allows users to remove entire sections of a webpage—be it ads or other content, keeping it hidden until you choose to revert the setting. Many might think of it as a tool for blocking ads, but I’ve found my perfect use case.

I frequently use Google Sheets on my iPad, but I’ve never been a fan of the app. I prefer accessing the web-based version, which requires deleting the Google Sheets app to prevent automatic launches. Unfortunately, the web version often prompts you to download the app with an annoying banner at the bottom. Now, I can easily dismiss this with the new feature! Here’s how:

  • Navigate to a webpage in Safari
  • Tap the options menu in the URL bar
  • Select ‘Hide Distracting Items’
  • Choose the section you want to conceal
  • Tap ‘Hide’
  • Watch it vanish!

As long as you spot the small blue crossed-out eye icon, that indicates something is hidden and will remain so even if you leave the page and return!
