Microsoft is rolling out an update for Outlook on Mac that introduces one of Apple’s most notable recent enhancements to Mail. This update aligns Outlook for Mac with its counterparts on Windows and the web concerning this feature.
The feature from Microsoft is referred to as Recall — not to be confused with that Microsoft Recall — and functions similarly to Mail’s Undo Send feature that Apple introduced in 2022.
The concept remains unchanged. You notice a typo or perhaps sent a message you wish you hadn’t to the wrong individual. What if you could retract that email before the recipient has a chance to read it?
Apple’s approach is somewhat straightforward, offering a brief delay of a few seconds before the email is sent.
Microsoft Recall, on the other hand, has its own strengths and weaknesses. Here’s how it operates:
Message recall becomes active immediately after you hit Send and is only applicable if both you and the recipient hold a Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Exchange email account within the same organization. Messages exchanged with Hotmail, Gmail, or live.com accounts cannot be recalled.
This means that you can “unsend” an email even after surpassing the typical one-minute buffer period, but it is restricted to interactions between Microsoft accounts within the same company. This is likely sufficient for internal business communication.
The Recall feature for Outlook on Mac is currently in beta testing and will be available to all users in the future.
Do you believe Apple’s Undo Send should function more like the Recall feature? We’d love to hear your opinions below.
