Apple Restricts One-Time Payment Options for AppleCare+, Focusing on Subscription Services

Apple has recently updated its AppleCare+ program. As indicated by Mark Gurman over the weekend, the company is eliminating upfront payment options for AppleCare+ in physical stores and on devices, providing only monthly or annual subscriptions unless purchased online.

AppleCare+ provides only monthly and annual subscription options, except for upfront purchases made online

According to Mark Gurman at Bloomberg:

The technology giant is altering its sales method for AppleCare+ concerning iPhones, its protection program for the device. Users will no longer have the option to make an upfront payment for an AppleCare+ Theft and Loss plan at retail locations or through the AppleCare menu on the iPhone. Instead, they will need to opt for monthly or annual payments.

A monthly AppleCare+ plan for the iPhone 16 Pro costs $13.99, whereas the earlier two-year upfront plan was priced at $269. AppleCare representatives have been instructed to inform customers that this change aims to reduce upfront expenses and avoid future coverage gaps. The company is also focusing on the more expensive Theft and Loss plans, which enable customers to replace a lost device by paying a deductible.

As of today, AppleCare+ can mainly be purchased through recurring subscriptions with options for both monthly and annual payments.

The annual plan appears to offer a minor discount for buyers. For instance, I can secure AppleCare+ for my Vision Pro for either $24.99/month or $249/year.

If you prefer a one-time payment option, you can still access it, but only when making an online purchase from the Apple Store.

The multi-year upfront payment option remains available when acquiring a product from Apple’s website; it can be selected during the configuration process.

However, for purchasing AppleCare+ in a physical Apple Store or through the Settings app on your device, subscriptions are now the sole choice.
