Developer Gets Doom Running on Apple’s Lightning to HDMI Adapter

You might have heard the phrase “but can it run Doom?” This is due to the trend of developers attempting to run Doom on the most unconventional platforms. Recently, in a surprising turn of events, a developer has managed to get Doom running on an Apple Lightning to HDMI adapter.

Running Doom on Apple’s Lightning to HDMI Adapter

A video posted on YouTube (via MacRumors) showcases the classic game being played on an Apple Lightning to HDMI adapter, which is typically used to connect old iPhones and iPads to external displays. However, since the Lightning connector lacks the necessary bandwidth for HDMI video transmission, Apple has incorporated a system-on-chip (SoC) within the adapter to handle video compression.

The developer reveals that the adapter operates on a simplified version of iOS. By jailbreaking the adapter’s SoC, despite its built-in security measures, they were able to install and run Doom, utilizing the chip’s capabilities. The gameplay was displayed on an external monitor linked to the adapter.

While most users may not have the desire to play Doom via an adapter, it’s fascinating to witness how a simple piece of hardware can emulate games that once required full-fledged computers. In 2016, another developer notably ran Doom on the MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar.

On a website titled “Can It Run Doom,” you can explore various projects by developers who have successfully run the game on calculators and even digital price tags. It’s interesting to note that Apple still retails the Lightning to HDMI adapter for $49; however, it can be found for $39 on Amazon if you happen to need one.
