Google App’s Integrated Browser Introduces Auto Dark Mode for iPhone

Following last year’s trials, the Google app for iOS has introduced an Automatic Dark Mode for its integrated web browser.

The Google app on iPhone allows users to open pages from search results and the Discover feed directly in its own browser, which features an address bar, a tab grid system, and a handy “Read Aloud” text-to-speech (TTS) option.

The new feature, Auto Dark Mode, applies to websites that lack their own design. To enable it, tap the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner, then select “Turn on Auto Dark Mode” at the bottom. This setting remains active and can be easily disabled.

Google acknowledges that the “Quality of sites may vary,” but after testing since June through Search Labs, the results have generally been positive in our experience. (If you’re already signed up, manually leave to access the stable version.)

Auto Dark Mode is available now with version 354.0 of the Google app for iOS.

In other updates, the Google app for iOS has removed its integrated Gemini chat functionality. Previously, a tab switching option allowed users to toggle between “Search” and “Gemini.”

After the launch of the Gemini iPhone app in November, Google has been promoting users to download the dedicated application. The option to ignore the splash screen has been eliminated.

The Gemini interface within the Google app had not seen updates since its introduction and was lacking compared to the full client, which provides access to Gemini Live and other models.
