In conjunction with the Safer Internet Day 2025 initiative, Discord unveiled a new feature on Monday designed to allow users to ignore others discreetly. With the click of a button, you can now mute someone on the platform without their knowledge.
Introducing the ‘Ignore’ Button on Discord
The newly launched feature, aptly called “Ignore,” delivers precisely what it suggests—providing users with the ability to overlook others. According to Discord, the purpose is to allow users to “create distance from specific individuals without their awareness.” This button can be used to take a break or to subtly sidestep conversations with individuals you prefer to avoid.
Discord already offers a blocking option that halts all interactions from the blocked user. However, the company acknowledges that users have expressed concerns that blocking someone can feel “confrontational and intimidating,” particularly for younger users. The Ignore button similarly restricts interactions, yet the other person remains oblivious to their being ignored.
When you opt to ignore someone, their messages, direct messages, notifications, and other status updates become invisible to you. To enable this feature, simply visit the individual’s profile, click the three dots menu, and select Ignore.
“While features like Ignore aid in managing your interactions, it’s crucial to remain vigilant regarding potential online threats,” cautions Discord.
The platform is also collaborating with a new nonprofit organization named ROOST (Robust Open Online Safety Tools), which aims to provide free, open-source resources for identifying and reporting child sexual abuse material (CSAM). ROOST receives backing from firms like OpenAI, Google, and Roblox.
You can access Discord via your web browser or download the iOS app from the App Store.
