Apple Launches New Health Study Utilizing iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods

Apple has announced a comprehensive health study designed to investigate the ways in which its products contribute to enhancing and advancing physical health, mental health, and overall wellness. The enrollment process for this exciting new initiative opens today in the latest version (6.0) of the Apple Research app, exclusively for participants within the United States. Here’s a deeper look into what Apple’s most ambitious health study has to offer.

This study is conducted in partnership with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a prominent research institution and a significant teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. […]

In the realm of medical research, findings are frequently constrained by factors such as participant recruitment numbers, data collection capacities, and the duration of studies. However, Apple devices widen the scope of possibilities. The Apple Health Study builds on insights gleaned from the Apple Women’s Health Study, the Apple Hearing Study, and the Apple Heart and Movement Study, which collectively boast over 350,000 participants nationwide.

This new longitudinal and virtual study seeks to understand how technological data—gathered from both Apple and third-party devices—can aid in anticipating, identifying, monitoring, and managing health changes among participants. Researchers will also investigate interconnections across various health domains. The study encompasses an array of health and medical conditions, including activity levels, aging, cardiovascular health, circulatory health, cognitive health, hearing, menstrual health, mental health, metabolic health, mobility, neurologic health, respiratory health, sleep, and more.

Launched in 2019, Apple’s Research app has empowered users to voluntarily participate in medical research studies with minimal effort beyond sharing their information. Participants retain the freedom to exit the studies and halt data sharing at their discretion.

One of the standout features is that Apple frequently releases insights from its studies, and the Apple Health Study represents the broadest scope to date.
