Vice President J.D. Vance is set to make his first international trip since taking office, attending a two-day artificial intelligence summit in Paris next week.

The Artificial Intelligence Action Summit will bring together global leaders to address challenges solvable through AI. Its aim is to “collectively establish scientific foundations, solutions, and standards for more sustainable AI that serves the collective interest,” as stated by the French Embassy.

Co-hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the summit comes in response to a new Chinese artificial intelligence platform that has unsettled U.S. financial markets and alarmed the tech industry. DeepSeek, which launched recently, is an affordable, open-source generative AI tool that competes with platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, despite its reliance on less advanced technology and chips. No international regulations currently oversee the development of artificial intelligence.

This trip follows the White House’s announcement of Stargate—a $500 billion initiative to advance artificial intelligence development in the U.S., supported by companies like OpenAI, Softbank, and Oracle. President Trump described it as the largest AI infrastructure project in history, designed to provide the necessary physical and virtual infrastructure for the next generation of AI.

After the summit, Vance is expected to attend the annual Munich Security Conference.
