Apple Maps Introduces Cycling Directions Throughout the UK and Ireland

This week, Apple Maps has subtly enhanced its cycling capabilities for users in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Now, individuals can route cycling trips throughout the entire region.

Apple initially introduced cycling directions in its Maps application in late 2020, initially limited to a few cities in the U.S. While cycling navigation support in the UK has been present for some time, it was not comprehensive … until now.

Thanks to a recent backend update, Apple Maps users can now plan extensive cycling trips across the UK.

The cycling directions in Apple Maps provide alerts for steep hills and highlight areas along the route that may require walking on the sidewalk. It is also aware of unpaved road conditions, which could pose difficulties for cyclists.

To initiate a cycling route, simply tap the ‘bicycle’ icon in the Directions panel within Apple Maps. Additionally, users can choose to avoid busy streets or steep inclines. The app will show a preview of the route, including elevation, distance, and estimated time of arrival (ETA).

Unlike driving directions, cycling directions in Apple Maps do not offer support for routes with multiple stops.
