Apple has unveiled the highly anticipated iPhone 16e. This latest model boasts an innovative design, features the A18 chip, is equipped with a 48MP camera, and includes comprehensive support for Apple Intelligence. It also introduces the first 5G cellular modem designed in-house by Apple, the C1 chip.
The iPhone 16e starts at $599 for the 128GB model, with pre-orders opening on Friday and first deliveries scheduled for February 28.
iPhone 16e Specifications and Features
The iPhone 16e comes with a 6.1-inch OLED display featuring a notch design, which houses Face ID functionality. At the bottom, you’ll find a USB-C port for charging and data transfer. The device also includes an Action button, replacing the traditional mute switch.
In terms of processing power, the iPhone 16e is driven by the advanced A18 chip. Apple claims that its 6-core CPU delivers performance that is up to 80% faster than the A13 Bionic chip found in the iPhone 11. Additionally, it features a 4-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine, which Apple states is optimized for large generative models and can run machine learning tasks up to six times faster than the A13 Bionic.
The new iPhone 16e provides complete support for Apple Intelligence, which includes features such as Genmoji, enhanced writing tools, photo cleanup capabilities, ChatGPT integration, and more. Users can access these features via the Action button or a new toggle in the Control Center.

On the rear of the iPhone 16e is a single 48MP Fusion camera, featuring an integrated 2x Telephoto option. Out of the box, the iPhone 16e captures high-resolution 24MP photos, with the option for 48MP images available. This integrated Telephoto option allows for high-quality zooming without the need for an additional dedicated camera. Additionally, it supports HDR, Portrait mode, and Night mode functionalities.
The front-facing camera is a 12MP TrueDepth model equipped with autofocus.
When it comes to video quality, the iPhone 16e allows recording in 4K with Dolby Vision at up to 60 frames per second. It supports Spatial Audio recording and includes an Audio Mix feature for users to adjust audio post-recording:

In conjunction with this release, Apple has discontinued the iPhone SE, which was their most affordable model with a starting price of $429. Additionally, both the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus have been removed from Apple’s lineup, with the iPhone 14 still available through Apple’s retail partners but the iPhone 14 Plus discontinued.

Apple’s latest iPhone is significant for multiple reasons. Firstly, it represents the most substantial upgrade to Apple’s entry-level iPhone model to date.
This also signifies the conclusion of the Home button era, as Apple has phased out all products that include this feature. Now, every iPhone for sale is equipped with edge-to-edge displays and Face ID technology, either with a notch or Dynamic Island. The iPad lineup incorporates Touch ID integrated into the power buttons, while the iPad Pro models continue to use Face ID.
The introduction of the C1 cellular modem marks a remarkable achievement for Apple. After years of development towards in-house cellular modem technology, this is the first time it has been implemented in an iPhone. This is a significant step towards Apple diminishing its reliance on Qualcomm for modem supplies.
Another key focus is Apple Intelligence, where the company is heavily investing in its AI capabilities to encourage consumer purchases of new iPhones.
