IRS Refund Scam: How Fraudsters Are Deceiving U.S. Taxpayers with ,400 Stimulus Check Offers
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has issued a warning regarding a new phishing scam where criminals are posing as the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to extract personal information from taxpayers.

As reported by KSBY, an NBC affiliate, scammers are sending out text messages claiming that recipients are eligible for a $1,400 stimulus check. These messages contain links that, when clicked, collect sensitive information.

“Scammers are impersonating the IRS to trick taxpayers into providing personal information by making false claims regarding a $1,400 stimulus check,” the BBB alerted. “While these messages might seem authentic, they are part of a phishing scheme aimed at stealing your data.”

The IRS has stated that eligible taxpayers who have not claimed the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns will automatically receive payments by late January 2025. No action is necessary, and the IRS will send a confirmation letter to those eligible.

The deceptive websites linked in these scams falsely claim to offer direct deposits or check deliveries within “1 to 2 business days” after personal information is submitted. The BBB warns:

“Clicking on these links can lead to malware installation or redirect users to fake forms requesting personal and financial information. The IRS does not reach out to taxpayers via text, email, or social media and will never ask for information in this manner.” According to the IRS, e-filed returns can take up to 21 days to process, while paper returns may take four weeks or longer. With concerns about potential staffing issues related to Donald Trump’s proposed federal hiring freeze, the agency advises taxpayers not to depend on specific refund dates. Refunds could be delayed if your return needs corrections or further review.

You can check your refund status on the IRS website, which updates refund information daily, overnight. To track your refund, you’ll need:
