Apple Readies Integration of Google Gemini with Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence has recently enhanced Siri’s capabilities by enabling it to relay requests to ChatGPT, which offers more nuanced responses than Siri typically can. During WWDC24, Apple’s software chief Craig Federighi hinted in a conversation that they aim to facilitate integration with other AI systems, including Google Gemini. A recent leak suggests that this integration may be on the horizon.

In a backend update accompanying the iOS 18.4 beta, Apple has introduced both “Google” and “OpenAI” as options for third-party models in Apple Intelligence. This insight comes from code investigator Aaron Perris via X.

While this does not definitively indicate that Gemini integration will be included in the upcoming iOS 18.4, especially considering the various delays surrounding Apple Intelligence, it does strongly suggest that it will be incorporated in future updates, potentially in a subsequent iOS 18 release or in iOS 19. Apple is anticipated to launch its own conversational model for Siri in iOS 19.

Google has recently unveiled new Gemini 2.0 models, featuring an updated reasoning model. There’s a chance these new models could be introduced to iPhones soon, particularly for those using iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16/16 Pro, or the new iPhone 16e.
