AirPods Pro Now Function as Hearing Aids in the UK

As reported earlier in January, the AirPods Pro 2 are now authorized for use as hearing aids in the UK, having received official approval for over-the-counter hearing aid devices.

These earbuds can assist with mild to moderate hearing loss. By using an iPhone alongside the AirPods Pro, individuals can execute a hearing assessment and customize their hearing profile for ongoing auditory enhancement. This feature comes as part of a complimentary software update.

Apple expressed its excitement to provide a comprehensive hearing health solution to its users in the United Kingdom.

To conduct the Hearing Test, users simply wear the AirPods Pro earbuds and follow the guidelines displayed on their connected iPhone. The assessment lasts about five minutes and produces a report detailing the extent of hearing loss in each ear.

Once completed, users can easily implement their hearing profile to utilize their AirPods as hearing aids. The audiogram is also stored in the Health app, enabling users to consult with healthcare providers as needed.

The hearing aid functionality mainly assists in enhancing the perception of external sounds, making conversations with others clearer. Furthermore, the personalized hearing profile is automatically engaged when enjoying music, films, or other media on an Apple device.

Even for those without current hearing impairment, the Loud Sound Reduction feature reduces the effects of loud surrounding noises, helping to prevent potential hearing damage. This feature is automatically activated, separate from other Hearing Health functionalities.

These Hearing Health capabilities are exclusive to the AirPods Pro 2, launched in late 2022. The first-generation AirPods Pro, AirPods 4, AirPods Max, and the entire Beats series do not offer this functionality.
