Utah Governor Considers Proposal to End Universal Mail-In Voting

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A new bill has been forwarded to Utah’s Republican governor that seeks to eliminate the state’s universal mail-in voting system. The Legislature has voted in favor of a measure that would require voters to actively request to receive their ballots by mail, shifting away from the automatic distribution previously in place. Individuals wishing to submit their ballots via mail or at a drop box will be required to provide an ID number. Should Gov. Spencer Cox approve this legislation, it would significantly alter the voting process in the only Republican-led state that currently permits all elections to be conducted via mail without requiring prior opt-in.
