The newly launched M3 iPad Air is now officially available, accompanied by an enhanced Magic Keyboard. Here’s why this new Air stands out as the most suitable iPad for many, while the M4 iPad Pro continues to reign as my preferred device, justifying its higher price.
M3 iPad Air offers the best features of the iPad Pro at a lower cost
Recent earnings reports from Apple have highlighted a trend: users seem to have a strong preference for the iPad Air.
Sales of the iPad Air have surged since the introduction of the M2 model last May, and the launch of the new M3 model just 10 months later underlines its popularity.
This trend makes sense, as the iPad Air occupies a valuable position in the lineup: it combines the best features of the iPad Pro series while being more budget-friendly.
Historically, the iPad Pro was the only model available with a larger 13-inch display.
Now, though, the iPad Air is also available in the same 11-inch and 13-inch sizes as the Pro models.
Moreover, Apple’s M-series chips deliver excellent performance across the board. In practical applications, the M4 chip in the iPad Pro doesn’t present significant advantages over the M2—or the new M3—iPad Air.
The iPad Air is compatible with the Apple Pencil Pro and boasts an upgraded Magic Keyboard that closely mirrors the significantly improved model of the iPad Pro.
Now, let’s take a look at the price differences:
The price gap between the Air and Pro models has widened significantly. However, the M4 line has led to increased prices for the Pro variants.
So, why might one opt for an iPad Pro?
For some, like myself, it’s about having the top-of-the-line iPad. And the M4 iPad Pro truly represents that.
M4 iPad Pro’s benefits remain valuable, contingent on your needs
The M4 iPad Pro comes with a hefty price tag—not only for the device itself but also due to the additional $300-500 you might need for accessories.
In contrast, the M3 iPad Air presents a much more palatable price point. Plus, the new M4 MacBook Air is seen as a real bargain at $999.
However, if you primarily use your iPad as a laptop substitute, as I do, the M4 iPad Pro has so much to offer.
The iPad Pro’s Ultra Retina XDR display has been dubbed “the most advanced display in the world” according to Apple, and it’s undeniably impressive.
Aside from the OLED technology, it’s challenging to part with the ProMotion support that only the iPad Pro offers.
The iPad Pro is also incredibly thin, setting records for its size and power; the 13-inch variant is the slimmest device Apple has ever manufactured.
I appreciate having Face ID on my iPad, as reverting to Touch ID would feel like a downgrade.
Another aspect to consider: despite the enhancements in the new Magic Keyboard for the iPad Air, it still lacks a few key features found in the Pro’s version.
- Aluminum palm rest is exclusive to the Pro
- Haptic feedback in the trackpad is also Pro-exclusive
I heavily utilize my iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard, so these improvements truly enhance the experience for me.
Lastly, beyond using the device for work, I frequently use my iPad Pro to watch shows. The OLED display, paired with the Pro’s four-speaker audio system, provides an excellent entertainment experience.
M3 iPad Air or M4 iPad Pro? Either choice is solid
Apple’s latest iPad selection offers clear guidance for potential buyers. The entry-level iPad has an affordable starting price, but it lacks advanced features. Conversely, the M4 iPad Pro stands as the pinnacle of iPad offerings. Positioned in between, the M3 iPad Air and A17 iPad mini deliver a wealth of powerful features for a reasonable investment.
Although I favor the M4 iPad Pro, it’s clear that the M3 iPad Air represents a smarter purchase for the majority of users. Unless you’re prepared to invest in the absolute best, the iPad Air provides an impressive iPad experience at a significantly lower price point.
