Fully Operational Apple-1 Computer Fetches 5,000 at Auction

The Apple-1 was the inaugural computer developed by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, signaling the dawn of Apple Inc. Thus, it’s not surprising that locating a functioning Apple-1 today is quite unlikely. Recently, however, an Apple-1 Computer was auctioned for $375,000.

Rare Apple-1 Computer Restored to Working Condition

RR Auction announced on Friday that it successfully auctioned a rare and historically significant Apple-1 Computer that remains fully operational. The item was “meticulously restored” by Corey Cohen, a specialist in vintage Apple devices. This particular unit is documented as #91 in the Apple-1 registry.

The Apple-1 sold at auction received an “exceptional” rating of 8.0 out of 10 for its “excellent cosmetic preservation” and the “distinctively bright labeling on its integrated circuits.” Additionally, the computer comes with its original manual containing handwritten annotations referencing Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Daniel Kottke, further enhancing its value.

“Owning an Apple-1 represents more than just having a computer; it is a fragment of history—a tangible link to the innovative vision of Jobs, Wozniak, and their pioneering team that revolutionized the technology landscape,” stated Bobby Livingston, Executive Vice President of RR Auction.

Alongside the Apple-1 Computer, the “Steve Jobs and the Apple Revolution Auction” featured several notable items:

  • A Steve Jobs-signed 1976 Apple Computer Co. Check No. 5, which sold for $112,054.
  • A rare, sealed first-generation 4GB Apple iPhone that fetched $87,514.
  • Another Steve Jobs-signed 1976 Apple Computer Company Check, which brought in $62,500.
  • An Apple Lisa Computer equipped with ‘Twiggy’ Drives, which realized $56,818.

Additional items are still available for auction, including prototypes of the first Macintosh and Steve Jobs’ business cards. More information can be found on the RR Auction website.
