New ‘EV Play’ Accessory Aims to Enhance Rivian Experience with CarPlay and More

Rivian remains one of the few manufacturers holding out against CarPlay, choosing instead to create its own infotainment system that integrates closely with the R1S and R1T models. However, a new aftermarket gadget launching this month claims it can add CarPlay along with a diverse range of other applications to Rivian vehicles, boasting a do-it-yourself installation that takes only 25 minutes.

As noted by Chris Hilbert on social media, the “EV Play” is an Android-based device designed to provide both wireless and wired CarPlay, alongside Android Auto, for Rivian’s infotainment system.

The EV Play website highlights that the device offers much more than just CarPlay:

The EV Play is an Android-based hardware solution that enhances your Rivian infotainment experience. It supports video streaming platforms such as Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and Amazon Prime, along with audio streaming services like Pandora, SoundCloud, and XM. You’ll also get navigation applications like Google Maps and Waze (finally!). Bored while charging? Enjoy gaming with titles like Call of Duty or Roblox, using real wireless game controllers (compatibility depends on the game). These are native applications, not tethered, although tethering is also an option.

Details on how EV Play integrates CarPlay, Android Auto, and other apps into Rivian’s setup are sparse. Rivian’s native infotainment system does support the Google Cast protocol, suggesting that EV Play might be leveraging this capability.

The project’s developer revealed that work on EV Play started last year, initially targeting a February or March release. However, the project’s website now indicates that the device will be available this month. Currently, there are no specifics on pricing or the installation process, but interested users can subscribe to the EV Play newsletter for updates.

DMN’s Perspective

As I remarked when discussing a now-obsolete accessory that offered CarPlay for GM EVs last week, the existence of such products highlights strong consumer demand. Drivers want CarPlay, and they are eager to find creative solutions to integrate it into their vehicles.

While Tesla does not support CarPlay, a vibrant community of enthusiasts has developed methods to implement it through various hardware and software solutions.

Another common approach to adding CarPlay to vehicles lacking the feature is through standalone displays. There are numerous portable screens available that enhance existing in-car infotainment by providing an additional dedicated CarPlay interface. These displays are surprisingly affordable, with prices starting well below $100.
