Mark Gurman from Bloomberg revealed today that Apple is working on a new iteration of the HomePod mini set for release next year. While the focus of the report is on a new wireless chip, my primary hope is that Apple integrates Apple Intelligence support into upcoming HomePod models.
HomePod and Apple Intelligence
I have HomePods spread throughout my home, and while their integration with AirPlay and Apple TV is undeniably helpful, the Siri experience remains quite frustrating. Aside from setting timers, Siri often misunderstands requests, particularly when it comes to playing music or podcasts—arguably the HomePod’s main purpose.
This week, with the official release of iOS 18.2, Apple announced a subtle yet significant update for Apple Music. It will now employ natural language search, thereby enhancing the service’s ability to comprehend user queries. This search capability operates online through Apple’s servers, meaning it will also benefit Siri on the HomePod.
While this should improve the process of using Siri on the HomePod for song selection, we still need more enhancements. Apple has stated that a new version of Siri, which will recognize your personal context, is on the way for iPhone, iPad, and Mac next year. However, given that the HomePod’s core feature is Siri, it too deserves this advanced functionality.
The device would become significantly more beneficial if I could pose queries about my schedule even without my iPhone nearby.
At present, HomePods utilize the same system-on-chips (SoCs) found in Apple Watches, which limits their capacity to support Apple Intelligence features. Rumors suggest that Apple is developing a “HomePad” that will come equipped with a large display and a chip capable of running advanced AI functions. Nevertheless, I also expect Apple to enhance the standard HomePods with a more sophisticated chip.
