AARP Alabama Alerts Residents to ,400 Rebate Text Scam

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Individuals who have not received their full COVID-19 stimulus payments are now receiving checks from the IRS, but scammers are attempting to exploit this situation.

This scam is based on a real scenario. The IRS is indeed distributing funds, with amounts reaching up to $1,400 for those who qualify.

Unfortunately, scammers are sending texts impersonating the IRS.

According to AARP Alabama, these scammers may request sensitive information such as Social Security numbers or prompt recipients to click on links that seem to lead to the IRS website.

Eligible taxpayers do not need to undertake any action to receive their funds.

“For anyone eligible for that $1,400 rebate, they don’t need to do a thing,” stated Jamie Harding from AARP Alabama. “They will receive the check directly from the IRS without having to apply or verify any information.”

Harding also emphasizes that the IRS does not reach out to individuals via text.

“The IRS will not text or call you,” she explained. “If you are ever uncertain about owing back taxes or facing any tax-related issues, they will communicate with you through a letter sent via mail.”

Another significant reason to avoid clicking on the fraudulent IRS link is that scammers can install malware on devices or engage in identity theft. AARP Alabama notes that these occurrences are increasing.
