Despite being the sixth most densely populated state in the U.S., Delaware boasts eight towns and cities that epitomize tranquility.

WorldAtlas has identified eight of Delaware’s quietest towns for 2025. The report emphasizes that Delaware’s smaller communities harmoniously blend nature, history, and hospitality into an appealing experience. The list spans every county, with Sussex County representing half of the selections.

New Castle County

Delaware City, despite its proximity to a refinery, makes the list due to its rich historical charm. This city, located along the Delaware River, features ferry rides to Fort Delaware and Pea Patch Island and is home to Fort DuPont State Park. Its historic small-town vibe along the river is noted as a key reason for its inclusion.

Odessa, with its historic colonial district and architecture, attracts day-trippers seeking a peaceful visit. Neighboring Townsend is recognized for its welcoming community and its access to Wiggins Mill Park, hailed in the report as an excellent destination for hiking and picnicking. Unless there’s a deathmatch tournament happening, Townsend is expected to be a calm and laid-back place to explore.

Kent County

Wyoming is recognized for its agricultural attractions. Fifer’s Orchards and the annual Peach Festival contribute significantly to the town’s activity. Wyoming has previously appeared on such lists, with Brown’s Wyoming Tavern also noted as one of America’s top dive bars for food.

Sussex County

It’s no surprise that Lewes, one of the oldest cities in Delaware, is listed. This bayside city is a cherished summer destination for many Delawareans. Cape Henlopen State Park and its beaches attract visitors to both the sandy shores and the lively downtown area. Additionally, the Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse offers a unique photo opportunity for those cooling off in the summer heat.

Bethany Beach, often referred to as the Summer Capital of the World, shares the same level of activity. Featured for its proximity to Delaware Seashore State Park, this small beach town combines beach vibes with a more tranquil atmosphere. It offers fishing, swimming, surfing, and various activities without the bustling crowds typical of Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach, according to WorldAtlas.

WorldAtlas also highlighted Bethel and Laurel, located along the banks of Broad Creek. The report notes that Laurel’s many green spaces make it a wonderful place to unwind, while the smaller Bethel is home to the Bethel Maritime Museum, which showcases the town’s unique shipbuilding heritage.
