All the Information We Have on Apple’s 5G Modem Thus Far

Apple has been on a journey to develop its own 5G modem for quite some time. However, this endeavor has faced significant delays, but recent indications imply that we might finally see Apple’s debut 5G modem next year. Continue reading for a comprehensive overview of what we know so far.

A Quick Overview of Apple’s 5G Modem

It’s understandable that Apple aims for greater autonomy over its hardware, given that the company already designs its own SoCs for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and various other devices. In 2019, Apple demonstrated a keen interest in developing its own cellular modems and acquired Intel’s modem division for $1 billion that same year. The objective was to eliminate dependence on Qualcomm’s components.

However, several years have lapsed, and Apple has yet to release a device featuring its own cellular modem. In fact, numerous rumors point to minimal or no advancements during this period.

A WSJ report from last year indicated that early prototypes were deemed unsuccessful due to their sluggishness and overheating issues, which rendered them inferior to Qualcomm’s existing 5G modems utilized in current iPhones. Such challenges have resulted in ongoing delays for the launch of Apple’s first custom 5G modem.

Apple is Anticipated to Launch its 5G Modem Next Year

Fortunately for Apple, it appears that engineers have successfully addressed some of these challenges, advancing the dream of a functional 5G modem. Multiple sources, including DMN, have reported that Apple intends to introduce devices featuring its proprietary modem in the coming year.

Reliable insiders disclosed to DMN that Apple has developed a sophisticated modem, codenamed “V59” or “Centauri,” capable of managing not just 5G, but also Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and even GPS functionalities. According to our sources, this modem is expected to significantly enhance battery efficiency, particularly when Low Power Mode is activated.

The iPhone SE 4 is anticipated to be the first device sporting Apple’s 5G modem, with an expected announcement in the first half of 2025. By the close of next year, at least one of the iPhone 17 models will also feature this new modem—most likely the iPhone 17 Air. While the modem promises improved battery efficiency, Apple remains cautious about implementing it in flagship models such as the Pro iPhones.

For example, a recent report from The Information indicated that Apple’s current 5G modem prototypes still fall short of Qualcomm’s chip in performance, and they also lack support for high-speed 5G mmWave technology.

Although it may take time before Apple integrates its 5G modem across its complete iPhone lineup, the new modem could serve well in devices like the Apple Watch, where energy efficiency is a higher priority than peak performance. Additionally, developing its own 5G modem might allow Apple to lower costs, though this doesn’t guarantee that savings will be passed on to consumers.

It looks like the wait for Apple’s 5G modem is about to end, especially for those who plan on purchasing a new iPhone SE next year.
