As reported by The New York Times, Amazon has officially made a bid to purchase TikTok. The platform may face another potential ban in the U.S. as early as April 5th unless ByteDance divests the app to an American company by that deadline.
The situation surrounding the TikTok ban has been quite remarkable. Initially, a ban was planned for January 19th, 2025. Subsequently, President Trump negotiated a delay, allowing TikTok to continue its operations in the U.S. for an extended period.
Despite this, the original legislation remains in effect, meaning that ByteDance must still divest TikTok to a U.S.-based entity. The newly extended deadline is swiftly approaching on April 5th.
While several acquisition offers have emerged, none have garnered significant attention until now. Amazon is reportedly entering the fray, as noted by The New York Times. According to their report:
Amazon has made a last-minute bid to acquire TikTok, the widely popular video app, as it nears the April deadline for being detached from its Chinese ownership or confronting a ban in the United States, according to three sources familiar with the matter.
Details on the specifics of Amazon’s offer remain unclear, though ByteDance reportedly views the bid as lacking seriousness.
