Emanuel Cleaver, the representative from the Democratic party gave way to controversy following his speech. he uttered the words amen and awomen when he was ending the congressional prayer.
The incident took place this Sunday. The democrat who hails from Missouri had received an invitation to deliver the congressional prayer celebrating the opening of the 117th Congress of the United States of America. This was where he took the gesture of using the word “women” along with amen. Representative Clever said that he actually intended to make a move towards neutralizing the prevailing gender difference. Along with being a political figure, he is also an ordained pastor of United Methodist.
“Amen-Awomen” Speech Gives Way To Criticism
The infamous “amen” and “women” speech were given our abiding by the proposal of a committee who argued for some changes to be brought in the rules of the house. It was told by them to drop using words like father, or mother. They proposed to honor all identities of gender.
Nevertheless, the speech that was given by Cleaver, did not go unnoticed, unchallenged, and uncriticized. The Republicans especially criticized it strongly. Others who followed started pointing out what amen really stood for, which was far from gender identification. They cleared out that the meaning of amen in Latin was ‘so be it’.
Guy Reschenthaler, the representative from the Republican party hailing from Pennsylvania took to the social media platform, Twitter, to express his reaction. He wrote that it was unfortunate because some representatives were not aware of the facts themselves. Republican Reschenthaler also wrote that it was hard to believe.
Matt Walsh, a conservative blogger referred to the Democratic politicians as clowns. He wrote that “amen” came with a deep meaning in Latin. However, “awoman” meant nothing. He said the newly introduced word was nonsense. The blogger also wrote that it was in the Democrats to turn everything into stupidity.
